Internationals SC Teams Impress at the Erie Elite Challenge Cup

Internationals SC experienced great success at this weekend’s Erie Elite Challenge Cup that took place in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Internationals 07/08 Blue team enjoyed a run to the championship game.  They reached the final with wins over SVA (4-1), FC33 (7-1), and Dixie Athletics (7-0).  In an exciting final, which could have gone either way, the girls ended as runners-up with a 2-1 defeat.

This selection of our U11 and U12 players, which do not typically play with each other, gelled together from the first game and scored a great team goal in the game against SVA. This is further evidence of how our club-based model with consistent philosophy, approach, and coaching methods across age groups aids in the player development process.

The Internationals 2010 Girls enjoyed the experience of their first tournament as a group and showed their grit and passion for the game in their three games. Internationals U15 Blue played in a four-team bracket, playing three round-robin games with the top two teams playing again in a final.  Saturday’s first game featured a 2-1 win versus Canton United. Up 1-0, ISC gave up the equalizing goal off a penalty kick in the second half.  ISC scored the crucial game-winner with less than four minutes left in regulation. Saturday’s second game was a 3-0 win versus SVA. The third game took place on Sunday, a 2-0 win over Club Ohio.

Sunday also featured a final, which ended in a 3-0 win over SVA.  Down 1-0 in first half, ISC recovered to take the lead 2-1 in the final minute before halftime. Gianna Glacken headed home a beautifully placed Selena Santiago corner kick. Glacken’s header proved to be the game-winner.  ISC scored their third goal early in second half to secure the win.

ISC conceded only two goals in four games, and only one through the run of play.  The other came off a penalty kick in the first game. Several standout performances were seen over the weekend.  Gabby Huryn played every minute in goal and made an acrobatic fingertip save on a lofted shot in the final to help preserve an ISC victory. Brenna Utrep scored five goals over four games.
